Veterans & Mesothelioma: Know Your Risk

The U.S. military used asbestos extensively in ships, vehicles, buildings, and equipment from the 1930s through the 1980s — mainly for insulation and fireproofing. Mesothelioma symptoms typically appear 20 to 60 years after exposure, which is why veterans who served decades ago are still receiving diagnoses today. Navy veterans face a higher risk than the general population because ships and shipyards used large amounts of asbestos.

The VA recognizes mesothelioma as a service-connected illness when most of a veteran's asbestos exposure occurred during active duty. The PACT Act of 2022 expanded eligibility for many of these benefits.

Military Jobs With Higher Asbestos Exposure Risk
Boiler technicians
Construction specialists
Demolition crews
Firefighters
Machinists & mechanics
Navy personnel (ships, submarines, carriers)
Pipefitters
Shipbuilders

Veterans in nearly any military role could face exposure, especially when working with older equipment or during repair and maintenance.

Common Mesothelioma Symptoms

Symptoms often mimic pneumonia, bronchitis, and other common illnesses — and most patients don't notice them until stage 3 or 4. Tell your doctor if you worked with or around asbestos, even decades ago.

Chest or abdominal pain
Fatigue or weakness
Fever or night sweats
Loss of appetite
Persistent cough or wheezing
Shortness of breath
Swelling in the chest or abdomen
Unexplained weight loss

Latency: Symptoms typically appear 20–60 years after asbestos exposure. Most reported symptom: Fatigue (70% of pleural, 86% of peritoneal patients).

Secondhand Exposure Affects Families Too

Veterans' families faced asbestos risks from living in on-base housing built with asbestos-containing materials and from secondhand exposure — fibers brought home on uniforms, gear, and equipment. Family members who developed mesothelioma from secondary exposure may qualify for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) or legal compensation through asbestos trust funds.
